To address the 2021 theme "Inclusion" for UQ Teaching and Learning Week we highlighted some of the teachers who enhance student learning in UQ's Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences.

Q&A with Dr Jared Miles

Dr Jared Miles
1. What kind of "Inclusion" teaching and learning practices do you incorporate?

I am lucky enough to teach students in their first Pharmacy course at UQ. One of the approaches I use to encourage Inclusion and Belonging right from the start of their student experience is to have them think about something in their life that they believe defines them. This could be their family, cultural heritage, high school, a sporting team they support, anything that’s made them who they are really. And then I ask the students to reflect on (at least) one way that this part of them will positively affect their career development. This helps students to realise that their character and experiences are valuable not only to themselves, but to everyone at UQ and in their future endeavours.

2. How do you hope to influence the student experience at UQ?

It is my hope that I can help students they feel valued at UQ. I always try to engage in ways that respect students’ time and contributions, and also try to acknowledge and understand their own individual experiences.

3. What do you enjoy about teaching students?

As a teacher, I really like seeing the spark in the eyes of students when they truly grasp a new idea. It is very rewarding for me to know that I’ve been able to teach the concept effectively, and exciting to think out how they will internalise and translate it in the future.

4. What are your career highlights so far?

I’m very proud to have been trusted with welcoming students into their first experience of Pharmacy. Watching them continue to learn and develop after my course is always rewarding
