Baseball was the flavour of the month in Brisbane – and it was no different at The University of Queensland, where Taiwan’s Eric Yung-Sheng Su has been awarded a $5000 bursary.
Diamond plate enthusiast Eric’s prize from the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences came shortly after the Brisbane Bandits won the Australian Baseball League.
“My passion for baseball is one of the leading reasons for me to choose to study a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Sciences (Honours) at UQ,” Eric said.
“When I was training for the sport in Taiwan I always desired a way to better develop skills in an effective, scientific way.
“I dream of developing improved performance-enhancing methods through the use of high technology and theory-based training strategies.
“I want to spread the joy of sports science to people of all ages and sporting abilities.”
Eric was formally awarded his International Education Services (IES) Foundation bursary by Faculty Associate Dean (Academic) Professor Sarah Roberts-Thomson and Professor Andrew Cresswell, Head of School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences.
Now a resident of New Farm, multi-talented Eric also revealed he had a background as a champion yoyo competitor in his homeland.
Receiving a $3000 bursary to the School of Pharmacy at the same time was Singapore’s Karman Lee.
Karman applied for the bursary after hearing glowing reviews of UQ’s base at the Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence at Woolloongabba.
“I saw that UQ had the most teaching awards in pharmacy of any university in Australia,” she said.
“I also learnt that hospital pharmacists are on the teaching staff at the School, where they share their expertise.
“Many Singaporean pharmacy scholars now choose UQ for their undergraduate studies.
“I feel I will be in good hands and will receive lots of support and guidance during my course.”
Along with Professor Roberts-Thomson and Professor Cresswell, the Head of School of Pharmacy, Professor Peter Little AM, was in attendance at the congratulatory ceremony.
They were joined by Dr Gary Osmond from the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, and Ms Donna Guest and Ms Chloe Lee from HaBS International office.
